The city of Los Angeles and residents of Boyle Heights in East LA are wrangling over the redesign of the sixth street bridge. The bridge has to be replaced because it has what experts cal alkali silica reaction, or bridge cancer. It is an incurable form of cancer that has caused the concrete of the bridge to deteriorate from the inside. There is a 70 percent chance the bridge will collapse if a strong earthquake hits Southern California.
